Quick changeover design: a new Lean methodology to support the design of machines in terms of rapid changeover capability

Purpose This paper presents Quick Changeover Design (QCD), which is a structured methodological approach for Original Equipment Manufacturers to drive and support the design of machines in terms rapid changeover capability. Design/methodology/approach To improve performance set up time, QCD addresses machine from single-minute digit exchange die (SMED). Although conceived aid completely new machines, can be adapted simple upgrades on pre-existing machines. The three consecutive steps, each supported by specific tools analysis forms facilitate better structure designers' activities. Findings helps equipment manufacturers understand current future needs manufacturers' customers to: (1) anticipate requirements different set-up process; (2) prioritize possible technical solutions; (3) build that are easy fast under variable contexts. When applied production system consisting subject frequent or time-consuming processes, enhances both responsiveness external market demands internal control factory operations. Originality/value development also particularly effective upgrading existing ones. QCD's practical application demonstrated using case study concerning vertical spindle machine.
